‘Old Passage’ shows the overview that I first saw, which stopped me in my tracks. I was taken by the play of light and shadow and the pattern they created on the stones and structures.
I did three variations depicting an ancient pathway in Avignon that I walked through many times during the time that I lived there.
BRIEF HISTORY OF AVIGNON
Avignon was first recorded in Roman Texts from the first century BC.
In the center of Avignon was a site of Neolithic habitation. It was also a Roman town until about the 5th century. Through the medieval period, Avignon has a strong and well-documented history, including the Popes who ruled from here, ecclesiastically and sometimes politically.
It is still a vibrant living town.
