Weathered Silver

This was painted on the east coast of the North Island, New Zealand.
I set up my easel in the sand and painted furiously as the sky darkened and the ocean edged closer to my feet, as the tide came in and the rain started. I quickly had to pack up . I liked the drama of the old twisted wood with its silver patina, gained from constant exposure to the sea and sky. This is the Pohutukawa tree or the New Zealand Christmas tree. When in bloom it is covered with bright red flowers. Even when not in bloom it has its unique beauty.
